HKCF advises BEW on €1 billion financing

Long-term transformation financing is a key component for the success of the heating transition.
We are therefore all the more pleased that BEW Berliner Energie und Wärme GmbH have successfully secured a €1 billion syndicated loan to implement key decarbonization projects. HKCF served as the exclusive debt advisor for the transaction.
The focus was on structuring financing that meets the specific requirements of large-scale energy infrastructure projects: long-term investment horizons, high initial investments, regulatory frameworks, and a clear decarbonization path. The combination of KfW subsidies and loan provision through a broad-based banking consortium creates a robust and long-term sustainable financing basis for this purpose.
Particularly noteworthy are the agreed loan terms of up to 20 years. On this scale and for an energy infrastructure company in a transition phase, the financing sets an important benchmark in the German banking market. It demonstrates that even large-scale decarbonization programs can be financed by banks over the long term if project quality, owner support, and the financing structure are convincingly aligned.
This financing thus makes a significant contribution to securing the upcoming investments in Berlin’s heating transition and, at the same time, underscores the great importance of long-term debt financing solutions for municipal and infrastructure transformation projects.
