109 Municipalities Invest in EAM – Contracts Signed in Kassel

A total of 109 cities and municipalities will become future shareholders in the regional energy provider EAM. On Monday, mayors and other municipal representatives signed the corresponding agreements at EAM’s headquarters in Kassel.

This development follows the approval by all district councils of the counties already involved in EAM, as well as the consent of the respective city and municipal parliaments.

With the signing of the contracts, all formal requirements for the participation of cities and municipalities in the regional utility provider have been fulfilled. The overall transaction process, in which the previous shareholders will sell a 35.3 percent stake to the municipalities, is scheduled to be finalized by December 19.

“Today marks another milestone in the remunicipalization of EAM,” stated Bernd Heßler, Mayor of Borken and lead negotiator for the municipalities involved in the participation process. “Through many lengthy rounds of negotiations, we have jointly succeeded in expanding the EAM municipal family and successfully implementing the second phase of remunicipalization.”

Still Open to New Stakeholders
EAM Managing Director Georg von Meibom emphasized: “The participation of the municipalities further strengthens and deepens our company’s traditional regional roots. We look forward to even closer cooperation with cities and municipalities in the future, and we aim to work together as partners to advance the energy transition at the local level.”

He added that both the current and new shareholders of EAM agree that municipalities interested in joining the company should continue to have the opportunity to do so in the future.
